The Most Important Cabin-Side Shifter Improvement for MK5 and MK6 Volkswagens.

We really love MK5 and MK6 Golfs and Jettas but the 2008 and newer shifter has one particular design compromise that leads to less than stellar shifting. The forward pivot pin fits poorly and is supported by a single very low quality plastic bushing. This results in side to side stick slop which reduces gate selection accuracy.  Watch the YouTube videos below. (Be sure to tap the full screen icon for more detail.) The excess movement you see in the video results in the shifter performance falling short of the rest of the car. Bring your late MK5 and MK6 shifter up to the level of the suspension, chassis, and ergonomics with the Dieselgeek Super Pin and First Gear Getter combo. Our Made in USA stainless steel Super Pin and custom bushings replace the normally non-serviceable shifter pivot pin. This set includes the First Gear Getter and the side to side Cable Saver cable end bushing as well! This kit is a must have for the ultimate shifting experience!

Fits the following years and models with five or six speed manual transmissions:

2012 - 2014 Golf R Mk6

(The list above does not include all VAG vehicles that use the riveted forward pivot pin  WHT001413 and bushing 6Q0711067A that is compatible with this kit.)

Install:  Please note that you will need to remove the center console on your car to install this part. This is the most tedious part of the install process.  We have a video below. It's really not all that difficult. You will also need to mix up some JB-Weld or similar epoxy (not provided) to glue the provided aluminum drill bushing to the steel bellcrank to allow you to drill off and remove the original VW pivot pin rivet head. You will need a 5/16" or an 8mm drill bit. (A YouTube video detailing this are posted at the bottom of this page.) Once you drill off the pin's rivet head you might need to drill into the pin further with a 1/4" or 6mm drill bit to relieve tension of the pin on the steel bellcrank. Yes, it sounds complex but in reality it isn't too bad. Once the bellcrank is free of the pin the install of the new pin and bushings is pretty straightforward. Please note you will likely need to open up the hole in the bellcrank with your 5/16" or 8mm drill bit prior to installing it onto the Super Pin.

Mk6 Sportwagen superpin install

Glad I finally took the plunge on this install. I'll begin by saying the parts provided are 100% high quality. No issue there at all
DieselGeek also provides a ton of info on how to install and it was very helpful. All of those things considered, it was pretty tedious to do. In my mk6 Sportwagen, the center console under the arm rest is slightly different. It has an ipod connector that's out of date and wouldn't be used but I had to figure out how to get it out since it's not in any of the videos. That wasn't too bad. Everything else was pretty much the same as the videos provided.

A criticism I will give is the drill guide provided that you're supposed to epoxy to the bell crank. I epoxy it and let it sit over night. As soon as I go to drill the old pin rivet, the guide comes off. And many others I've talked to in the forums and groups report the same. So I free hand drilled the rivet and it was fine. Just something to be aware of, if I did this again, I'd skip that waiting period and go ahead with drilling it.
I couldn't remove the small bushing at the bottom of the bell crank but it seemed really tight and no play so I left it.

Once I adjusted the super pin, I followed the instructions for the first gear getter and let the epoxy cure for 24 hours. I've driven on it for about a week and it's still sturdy. I did receive the screw to put into the FGG but decided to not use it yet.

Overall, a very good mod and just a little tedious. But the results are night and day

Thanks Fayiz. We really wish we could document every permutation of console but there are only so many hours in the day. We attempt to video the most common versions to do the most good with the limited resources we have. Glad you're pleased with the performance. We do recommend installing the #4-40 screw...you're there and it's only two easy steps - drill & install.

Worth Every Penny

My buddy suggested I get this kit because I had gotten a short shifter with some other shifter related bushings thinking it would eliminate the shifter slop. There was still some slop so I ordered this and bam. No more slop. Shifting is very precise and smooth. Love it!

Thanks Jesse. Glad you love it.

Noticeable improvement

Paired this with the sigma 5 and the shifting is short and precise. It's odd to say but the shifts feel like its from a race car, I've never driven one but I'm assuming they're like that lol
The installation wasn't bad at all. I installed it on my mkv rabbit. I'd say the most tedious part was the sanding; I didn't have a Dremel so I used the method showed on the videos but it was so time consuming. After close to an hour of sanding it down, the superpin glided and turned easily. I did shim the ball too, and the FGG made a huge improvement. I did a dry test run, to see how it felt and wow, it was so precise. After using JB-Weld on the FGG, I left it to dry for 24hrs and dang everything was on place.
Although I did run into a small issue, when on neutral moving the stick side to side, when placed to the far right, there would be a bit of resistance for the stick to re-center. I tried to take it apart and see what I did wrong but with the FGG glued with JB weld, it wasn't going to happen. But I was able to take out the super pin from the right side. Everything was fine. The culprit was the spring, it seemed to be weak. I wish to change it but there is no clearance to take it out. Oh well, it's not a huge deal, DG's products worked as they intended. Don't hesitate on this if you have a slopping shifting mechanisms, the installation isn't hard at all.

Night & day improvement

Installed this with the superslider & new bushings for the shifter shaft.

As an enthusiast that has done many small upgrades on my mk6 GLI, I can confidently say that this has been one of the best upgrades that I have ever done. The car feels completely different.

I highly recommend this kit to anyone that enjoys driving!!

Try this first

I had trouble getting into first, I'd have to bump into 2nd then hit 1st for reliable engagement.

I had a rodent chew through some wires that caused a p2185 coolant temp 2nd sensor code go off. The wires were right next to the airbox so I had to remove it to fix them. Just disconnect clamps and it pulls out somewhat easily. Anyway I noticed the shifter and wanted to play with it... Found out the nut was a little loose and the shifter would wobble on the splines. Tightened it up and my car shifts great again and first gear is easy again! I'm going to pull it off and put some red loctite on the splines as that will take up all the slop in the splines. Done this on dirt bike sprockets so it's a proven thing.

My 2012 tdi 6m has about 110,xxx miles on it and was hard to get first for about the last 15k. I figured I'd need new synchronizers but not anymore!!
